I'm actually waiting for Helena Bonham Carter to pop up suddenly. 😂😂. Clive Owen and Tim Roth star in Francois Girard's drama about a Jewish musician who barely escaped Poland before the Holocaust and his adopted English brother. Clearly made by folks who are passionate about classical music, The Song of Names adapts music critic Norman Lebrecht's acclaimed novel of the same name for the big screen, producing — in the hands of director Francois Girard ( The Red Violin, Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould) and composer Howard Shore, among others — a Holocaust-themed requiem. It's lucky that Shore's original compositions here and the cuts from the classical repertoire, some performed with impressive skill by child actor Luke Doyle himself, are strong enough to give heft to an otherwise earnest, credulity-straining melodrama. But the globe-trotting story, starring Tim Roth and Clive Owen, is likely to appeal to specific demographics and could do alright as a niche release in select markets. Skittishly moving back and forth between scenes set at various points between the late 1930s and the mid-'80s, in chronological terms the story starts on the eve of World War II. Polish Jew Zygmunt Rapoport (Jakub Kotynski) has brought his son Dovidl (Doyle), a violin prodigy, to London in hopes of persuading one of his contacts there to help find a Jewish home where Dovidl would be safe from the Nazis. Impressed by the 9-year-old's gift, music publisher Gilbert Simmonds (Stanley Townsend) offers to take him in, even though the Simmonds family isn't Jewish and would have to make accommodations for the boy. Zygmunt returns to Warsaw, leaving Dovidl behind, to try and protect his wife and Dovidl's two sisters back in Poland, but they don't make it out before the Nazis invade. In London, Gilbert's son Martin (played first by Misha Handley until age 13, then Gerran Howell as a young man and Tim Roth as the middle-aged version) initially bridles over having to share a room with arrogant, mischievous Dovidl. But as the war rumbles on and Dovidl understandably worries about what might have happened to his family back in Poland, the two young men become as close as brothers. After the war, there's still no sign or word of the Rapoport family back in Warsaw, and, fearing the worst, Dovidl (now played by Jonah Hauer-King) renounces his religion and pours himself into honing his craft. But on a night that is to be his grand musical debut at an auditorium Gilbert has spent his life savings on in order to launch his ward's career, Dovidl simply doesn't show up and is never heard from again. All this is told in flashbacks, shuffled together with the '80s-set storyline in which Martin, now a musical examiner, notices a talented violinist (Max Macmillan) kiss his lump of rosin for good luck exactly the same way Dovidl used to. He becomes convinced the kid must have either been taught by Dovidl or someone else who was taught by him, and what do you know, he's right! Despite the discouragement of his wife Helen (Catherine McCormack), who also knew Dovidl back in the day but thinks he should let his quest go, Martin plows on in search of his old friend, schlepping from Poland to New York and back to London until he meets Clive Owen playing a key character and all is revealed. There is no denying that a sequence roughly halfway through where characters walk through the standing stones that memorialize the dead at the Nazi death camp Treblinka packs a wallop, especially with the accompaniment of Shore's keening, soaring score, one of his best. As a cinematic document that helps service the command written in many languages on one of those to stones to "Never Forget, " this is a timely look at the horrors of the Holocaust. But some viewers may experience a few niggling doubts about how we're supposed to feel about some of the characters, like Dovidl, who no doubt suffers enormously but also inflicts suffering on nearly everyone around him. Perhaps the point is that we're meant to forgive his sins not just because of his suffering but also because of his talent, like the way some give Roman Polanski a pass because of what he went through in the war and for Chinatown? But any way you slice it, this is still a somewhat claggy, uneven work with stiff performances from the leads, both of whom seem to be sleep-talking lines as if they learned them in Yiddish first. The actors playing the younger versions of the characters shine more, especially in some of the show-stopping musical performance moments, such as a dueling fiddles scene set in an underground bomb shelter. Greetings again from the darkness. The title refers to a sacred Jewish ritual where the names of the Holocaust victims are recited in a musical style. It's a process that (sadly) covers a few days. In this film, it takes on a personal, as well as historical, significance. British cultural affairs expert Norman Lebrecht wrote the 2001 novel on which writer-director Francois Girard (THE RED VIOLIN, 1998, plus plays, operas and 2 Cirque de Soleil shows) and co-writer Jeffrey Caine based the film.
We open in 1951 London just minutes before the scheduled performance of young violin virtuoso Dovidl "David" Rapoport. He is to play Bruch and Bach in a concert sponsored by his "adoptive" father figure Gilbert Simmonds, who has sunk his entire life savings into producing the concert. Despite the assurances of Simmonds' son Martin, who has become like a brother to David, the featured performer is a no-show. leading Martin to search for him over the next 35 years.
The film covers the story from the time Dovidl's Polish-Jewish father (played by Jakub Kotynski) agrees to his leave 9 year old, a violin prodigy, with the non-Jewish Simmonds in an attempt to protect the boy from the German invasion of Poland in the late 1930's. As Dovidl and Martin grow together, their bond become stronger. Martin is present when Dovidl renounces Judaism, even as becomes more proficient with his instrument and more saddened by the Holocaust that he avoided in his home country.
Both boys are played at three different ages by three different actors. Dovidl is played by Luke Doyle at ages 9-13, Jonah Hauer-King at ages 17-23, and by Clive Owen in middle age. Martin is played by Misha Handley at ages 9-13, Gerran Howell at ages 17-23, and by Tim Roth in later life. The actors do a good job of capturing Martin's early irritation at Dovidl's arrogance, the shock of the no-show betrayal, and the later in life man who changed everything when he found out about his family, as well as the music teacher so desperate to find his long lost friend/brother.
The film bounces between the three timelines so that we have a full picture of the impact they have had on each other's lives, and how Dovidl's disappearing act was quite devastating. Much of the film centers on Martin tracking down leads and talking to folks for some idea of the path taken by Dovidl. Mr. Roth is especially effective (and surprisingly understated) in his performance as a man haunted by the unexplained actions of a loved one. His wife, played by Catherine McCormick, is simultaneously understanding, patient, and emotionally affected.
Stanley Townsend plays Martin's father. He cares for Dovidl as if her were a son, and provides what's necessary for the prodigy to develop and be groomed for performance. Three-time Oscar winner Howard Shore delivers a score that follows the good times and bad, not an easy task for a family drama within the shadow of the Holocaust. One specific sequence stands out, and it is filmed on the hallowed grounds of Treblinka - now a memorial, where the extermination camp once stood.
There are many facets to the story, and most involve heavy emotions. We see children bearing more than they should. Parents protecting their children in times of crisis. The difference between religion and ethnicity is discussed. Broken trust proves especially damaging. Dovidl's disappearing act could be compared to that of JD Salinger, in that he seemingly disappeared for years. And maybe most of all, the idea of survivor's guilt is a theme, as Dovidl explains, You don't have to be guilty to feel guilty." The film may have some pacing issues, but it affords such a wealth of conversation topics, that any flaws are easily forgiven.

There have been many films about the Holocaust covering it from many different angles so a new film must be in the excellent category because 'good' isn't good enough and though "The Song Of Names" has some interesting sections it has too much working against it. One of the interesting parts is the name of the film itself and if there really is a song of names and after some research, I have to do more research because I haven't found a definite answer yet! The screenplay by Jeffrey Caine, based on a novel by Norman Lebrecht, goes back and forth from the 1930s to the 1980s with 3 different actors playing the 2 main characters Davidl Rapopart and Martin Simmonds when it could have easily been done chronologically. The story is about a 12-year-old violin protege, Davidl who is brought from Poland to England by his father hoping to find a place for him to escape from the nazis. A music publisher, impressed by the boy's talent, agrees to take him in and after a minor skirmish with the publisher's son who is a couple of years younger, the 2 become fast friends. At the age of 21 Davidl is to give his musical debut completely subsidized by the publisher but never shows up and has disappeared. The film then follows Martin as he looks for his friend and tries to find out why he disappeared. There are many awkward scenes and some that take your breath away such as the one where Martin and his wife walk through Treblinka, a Nazi death camp, where tall, standing stones memorialize the dead. Some in the audience may not be aware that Davidl having a bar mitzvah means he is now a man at 13. The musical moments shine while it is hard to really rate the performances due to the going back and forth through the decades. "The Song Of Names" is a good movie but not quite good enough to attract enough of an audience.

A lifetime later, a young violinist shows a 56 year old Martin a stylistic flourish that could only have been taught by Dovidl. It tells the story of two boys who grow up together. They are brothers through circumstances: the violinist child prodigy from the Warsaw Jewish community and the London lad who eventually befriends him when they are brought together. The story revolves around the sudden disappearance, on the day of his virtuoso concert, of the prodigy. Only near the end of the film do we discover why. The film brilliantly deals with multiple layers and flashbacks, with perfect pacing and quite outstanding acting. The musical score is phenomenal. This is a film about tragedy and loss, about how trauma lives on. It perfectly weaves the themes of ethnicity and religion. It's a superb, haunting, film which I have not done justice here. In part that's because I don't want to do a review with spoilers. You have to go and see this film and allow your soul to be transported by the wonderful cinematography, script and musical score. They don't make films as beautiful and brilliant as this very often. Go see it.

The whole working world is flooding into town while I am heading out, and for no good reason. What is more, I am just about the only man on the forecourt in a respectable suit. Times have changed, and chinos are worn to work. Or whatever they call work. Sitting at a flickering screen, hunting and gathering data, strikes me as a poor substitute for the thrill of the chase, the joy of the kill, the kiss of conquest. There is no romance, no mortal struggle, in digitised so-called work. It is a virtual pursuit, without real vice or virtue. Mine, on the other hand, is a people profession, hence almost obsolescent. It would not do to enquire too closely into the purpose of my trip. 'Is your journey really necessary? ' nagged the railway hoardings during the war. No, not enough to convince the auditors, who will slash my expenses claim on seeing the negligible returns. Nor to satisfy Myrtle, who will raise a quizzical eyebrow and register a connubial debt. There is no pot of gold at the end of my trail nor, truth be told, enough profit to interest a Sunday boot-saler--which is not, of course, what I tell the accountants ('must keep in touch with consumer trends'), or Myrtle ('meeting a familiar face can make all the difference when money's tight'). What matters is that I know why I am going, and I don't have to make excuses to myself. Escape, or the illusion of it, is what keeps me alive and my business more or less solvent. Survival instinct propels me through the Euston crowds towards a reserved first-class seat on the nine-oh-three Intercity Express, my chest pounding with unaccustomed effort and an absurd anticipation of adventure. Absurd, because previous expeditions have attested beyond reasonable doubt that any prospect of adventure will get scotched at source by my innate reserve and speckless propriety--attributes that are bound to be mentioned in my none-too-distant obsequies, alongside the Dear Departed's musical expertise, mordant wit and discreet philanthropy. Adventure is, in any case, antithetical to my nature and inadvisable in my state of health. Furred arteries and a fear of bypass surgery have imposed severe restraints. I am limited to six lengths of the health-club pool and half a mile on the electronic treadmill; excitement is strenuously avoided; conjugality is conducted rarely and with the circumspection of porcupines. 'Take care of yourself, ' are Myrtle's parting words and, for her sake, I do try. In the absence of marital ardour, it's the least I can do. Yet, even a rackety, unbypassed old heart can be stirred by departure fantasy. As I board the train, my pulse picks up ten points in fake anticipation. I look ahead breathlessly, with a reassuring sense of déjà vu. It's like watching televised football highlights on a Saturday night when you've already heard the classified results on the radio. The programme may reveal some fine points of form and skill, but any tension has been ruled out by an incontrovertible foreknowledge of the outcome. Watching stale soccer from the snug of a prized deco armchair is the limit of my permitted thrills--a sad comedown for one who was groomed to make things happen. Sad to have slipped from motivator to spectator, from the wings of great stages to a piece of high-winged furniture. Still, there are compensations. By staying out of the thick of things, I have acquired an aura of what, in small-business circles, passes for timeless wisdom. Lifelong prudence has reaped its rewards. My town house has a heated indoor pool, I holiday winter and summer in wickedly overpriced Swiss resorts and my pension arrangements are structured to keep me in comfort for three lifetimes. 'Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, ' said the prophet Isaiah--so we made it the tribal aspiration. What greater calm can a man find on earth than the quiet rustling of gilt-edged assets? At Rotary and Bnai Brith you cannot tell me apart from the rest of the Lodge, and that is how I like it; none of the other brothers has, to my certain knowledge, been invaded by genius and ruined by its defection. Forget I mentioned that: not many people are meant to know about it. 'Mustn't grumble, ' my father used to say, when asked how he was; and so do I. Normality is my nirvana. Only within, deep within, at the clotted edge of irreparable loss, do I feel the need for an unnecessary journey that will allow me to avoid devastating self-contemplation and the acceleration of inherited arteriosclerosis. I wouldn't be surprised if the railways were mostly run for people like me, half-wrecked psyches in perpetual flight from the missing part. I can just see a Development Director springing his brainwave initiative at a board meeting. 'Why don't we run extra Monday-morning services to the boondocks? ' he proposes brightly. 'There must be thousands of useless deadweights, dog-ends and waiting-for-godders who are just dying to get away. ' Settling in my window seat I pop two pills, a brand-name sedative and a homoeopathic palliative, shutting my eyes for ten minutes of yogic meditation. My Harley Street consultant (the cardiologist, not the naturopath) advises daily exercise and the avoidance of agitation. Being of a responsible disposition, I eat warily and carry a kidney-donor card. If I see a pretty girl or a police chase, I look away. In Michelin-starred restaurants, I order steamed fish. I have many friends but no recent lovers, vague interests but no driving passions. Myrtle, my partner in life, has a life largely of her own. A large-boned lady of healthy appetites, she lunches sparingly in good causes and plays bridge for her metropolitan borough. She took it up in her thirties, after having children, discerning in the pastime an outlet for her formidable memory and jugular instincts. Myrtle can remember the seating plan at every chicken-schnitzel wedding we have attended, the Order of Service at Her Majesty's Coronation, the universal symbols of the periodic table and the entire line-up of the Hungarian football team that inflicted England's first home defeat, 3-6, in the aforementioned Coronation Year, which was also the year of our marriage. Many's the time I have urged her to apply her remarkable mental powers to a worthier object than a pack of cards. But Myrtle's tolerance for ladies who lunch on behalf of the starving and homeless is limited. Our two sons have grown up and apart from us, triumphs of private schooling and canny marriages. One is a Kensington obstetrician with a trophy wife, the other a libel lawyer with a traditional spouse. Over dinner, I prefer the barrister's scurrilous gossip to the manicured sanctimony of a society abortionist. But I feel no satisfying patrimony when, on Friday nights, we play a charade of happy families around a table groaning with murderously poly-saturated fats. Monastically picking at my wife's heedlessly prepared dietary dynamite, I retire dyspeptically to bed with a glass of camomile tea and the Spectator, a lifelong habit, while coffee is taken in the lounge. My apologies are accepted with a wince of scepticism. Some in the family, I suspect, ascribe my medical condition to chronic hypochondria. A decent Omm-trance is pretty much unattainable on a train that starts and lurches through a thicket of signals, then spurts past outer suburbs like a runaway horse. Once the speed settles to a steady rocking, incomprehensible announcements splutter forth about the whereabouts of the refreshment car and would the chief steward please make his way to first class, thank you. Giving up the quest for inner peace and undistracted by the silvered February landscape, my attention turns to business, which barely needs it. The company I keep going is a spectre of the firm that my father founded in 1919 'to advance the appreciation of music among men and women of modest means'. In its heyday, Simmonds was a household name, to be found in the nation's living rooms among the Wedgwood teacups, Hornby toys and grafted aspidistras in Robertson's jampots. Simmonds (Symphonic Scores and Concerts) Ltd manufactured piano reductions of orchestral masterpieces, issued in noble purple covers for the uniform price of sixpence. We also produced popular lives of the great composers, albumised folk-songs and approachable novelties by uncelebrated living composers. But the heart of Simmonds was the concert division, which organised orchestral nights for all the family, grannies to toddlers, at group discounts that worked out at less than the price of a cinema seat. Simmonds' suite of offices, nuzzling the old Queen's Hall at the top of Regent Street, buzzed seven days a week with unprofitable ideas, artistic aspirations and fatally entrapped wasps. No window was ever opened, for fear of diluting the fug of inspiration. Elbow-patched pianists in pursuit of unpaid fees jostled students and factory workers waiting for last-minute penny tickets. Trilby-hatted newspapermen interviewed stateless conductors in secluded corners--on one occasion, apparently, in the left hand stall of the ladies' washroom where the cistern drip-dripped so relentlessly that an idle wit attributed the metronomic tempi of that night's Tchaikovsky Fifth to the inadequacies of Simmonds' plumbing. My father, hunched behind a pyramid of unread contracts and uncorrected page-proofs, presided at all hours over his musical emporium, seldom locking up before midnight. 'I can't leave the place empty, ' he would say. 'Who knows when the next Kreisler might walk in? ' Half a century before open-plan offices, he took his door off its hinges, the better to observe all comings and goings. No artist ever entered unnoticed. As mail piled up and secretaries resigned in tears, my father juggled three telephone receivers simultaneously, virtuosically and without ever raising his voice. Mortimer (Mordecai) Simmonds had the manners of a gentleman and the abstraction of a scholar--though he was neither, having been sent to work 'in the print' at thirteen years old to support a widowed mother and four sisters in Bethnal Green. In the inky-stink din of a newspaper press, he befriended the lower echelons of journalism and ascended the proof-readers' ladder to join the sub-editors' desk of a literary supplement, itself a passport to Hampstead salons. There he met in mid-war and was persuaded to marry my mother, the dowried and somewhat dowdy eldest daughter of an Anglo-Sephardic dynasty, the Medolas, who offered to set him up in the business of his choice. Bookishness beckoned, the more so after two years on the Somme, but he failed to find the kind of books that would give him aesthetic satisfaction and would also make money. His business career was going nowhere when a friend gave him a spare ticket to the Queen's Hall on 4 May 1921, a date he would commemorate every year of his life. The soloist was Fritz Kreisler, back for the first time in eight years. Hearing him play an innocuous concerto by Viotti moved my father more than all the words he had ever read. Kreisler, with his bushy moustache and flashing eyes, ran off dazzling cadenzas as if they were child's play while holding listeners, one by one, in the grip of a limpid glare. 'I was seduced, ' my father would recall. 'It was as if he played only for me. From the moment his eye caught mine, I knew that my life was destined for music. ' Unable to read a score or play a scale, my father hired a tutor to instruct him in the difference between crotchets and quavers and the significance of pitch relations in concert programming. He frequented student recitals at the Trinity College of Music, behind Selfridge's department store, sniffing talent by instinct. One violinist he picked off the pavement, busking in Oxford Street. With a handful of hopefuls, he put on chamber recitals at the Aeolian Hall, a churchy room on Regent Street; and with the newly formed Birmingham Orchestra, bussed in for the night, he staged the first of his family entertainments at the marbled Royal Albert Hall, on the southern edge of Hyde Park. No critic was ever invited to his concerts, but the halls were full and admission was universally affordable. An outraged music industry condemned Simmonds for 'lowering the tone'. My father laughed, and halved his top-price tickets. He refused to join collegial committees to discuss unit costs, credit lines and entry controls on foreign performers. He could not countenance anything that imposed restraint on an interpreter of music, a bringer of light and joy. He revered artists, almost without reservation. No Balkan pianist with three Zs in his name would ever come under pressure from Mortimer Simmonds to adopt a new identity for English convenience. No fat singer was ever required to slim. He gave second chances to panic-frozen beginners and blamed his own shortcomings when a concert flopped. He had no time for snob-appeal or seasonal brochures, for copyright niceties and entertainment tax--least of all, let it be noted, for his wife and son, whom he only ever saw in daylight over Sunday lunch, and not with undivided attention or unfailing punctuality. So when the phone rang one winter Sunday with the roast beef charred in the oven and my mother muttering over her petit-point, I failed to react in any way, hysterical or practical, to news of his death at the desk. My father belonged to Simmonds (Symphonic Scores and Concerts) Ltd, not to me; he died at his post, as it were, amid a mound of unopened mail. He was sixty-one, my present age. At the funeral, the rabbi spoke of his love of art, his humility and self-deprecating wit. He left me wishing I had seen more of him. Hauled out of Cambridge, where I was sitting my history finals, I took charge of the firm and swiftly secured its future. On to my father's hyperactive disorder, I imposed financial rigour. The rabble of loss-making unheard-of composers, most of them Hitler or Stalin refugees, was parcelled off to a modern-music publisher in Vienna, who kept three and unsentimentally sacked the rest. The family concerts were wound up and the soloists redirected to rival agencies. Two became famous; the rest vanished into marriage, music-teaching or orchestral drudgery. I was sorry to lose the artists, for their eagerness was infectious and their egotism endlessly amusing. Some I had grown up with, others were so daunted by the challenge of tying their shoelaces that I did not like to think what would become of them without our unstinted protection--but what else, in the circumstances, could I have done? There was a pressing personal reason for me to terminate our involvement with talent, a reason I try very hard, on medical and legal advice, not to dwell upon or commit to print. I got a good price for the offices from a Dutch merchant bank, retaining a corner space for myself, a spinster secretary called Erna Winter and an occasional junior. The revenue from these rapid disposals provided for Mother, who fell silent after Father's death and required periodic care in a private psychiatric hospital. During a remission she helped arrange my introduction to Myrtle, the bony daughter of Hispanic cousins, and morosely graced our solemn nuptials before overdosing on anti-depressants--whether deliberately or accidentally I neither knew nor deeply cared.

Download free the song of names printable. | Glenn Kenny December 25, 2019 It’s 1951, and a major musical event is about to enliven London’s classical scene. The evening depicted in this movie’s opening will feature a young violin virtuoso, Dovidl Rapaport, playing a program of Bruch and Bach. Dovidl’s friend Martin, a fellow in his early twenties like the absent violinist, tries to reassure the older folks around him that the musician wouldn’t miss this date. But he does. And Martin never sees him again. More than 30 years later, this is still eating at the adult Martin, played by Tim Roth. Now a music teacher, married to his teen sweetheart, he finds himself intrigued by an auditioning would-be student who rosins his bow in a particular way. That way belonged to Dovidl, who, we learn in flashbacks, was an arrogant child prodigy left in the care of Martin’s father before the outbreak of World War II. The boy Dovidl is a disruptive Jew in a mode recalling that of Philip Roth. A self-proclaimed genius, he initially infuriates the buttoned-up young Martin. But they soon become the best of friends, and in England, young Dovidl is molded (insofar as he can be molded) by Martin’s doting father, who’s grooming him for a career. Even as his family back in Poland is being shuttled to Treblinka. Advertisement Based on a novel by Norman Lebrecht (the screenplay is by Jeffrey Caine) and directed by François Girard, “The Song of Names” is a pointed demonstration that “survivor’s guilt” is a rather more complex state than the slightly glib phrase suggests. In his late adolescence, agonizing over the still-unknown fate of his family, Dovidl renounces Judaism and acts out in other ways. But his failure to show up for the concert that Martin’s father put his life into, and subsequent absence from Martin’s life, seems an inexplicable betrayal. Tim Roth plays the Martin of the 1980s with a controlled agony; it’s one of the actor’s most purposefully understated performances, and it makes the movie worth seeing. The adult Dovidl is played by Clive Owen, and since this is in part a detective story, I am hesitant to describe him in much detail except to say it’s Owen as you’ve never seen him before. The character’s own agony derives from his definitive discovery of his family’s fate—literally a life changing moment. The titular “Song of Names, ” sacred music with a ritual function, is not merely explained but turns to a motif. Literate, sober, soulful, and considered as it is, the movie is also a little overly scrupulous in its tastefulness. “The Song of Names” doesn’t get its hands dirty; as crassly as young Dovidl behaves, as much of a chip on his shoulder the adult Martin carries, director Girard, whose filmography includes low-key meditations like “ The Red Violin ” and “33 Short Films About Glenn Gould, ” keeps things emotionally tamped down. In the case of Roth’s character, it gives the actor some new places to go. But in other respects, the approach, which is most pronounced in the sun-dappled wanderings over blitzed-out London by the two boys, feels slightly cramped and more than familiar. " The film scores 43% on the professional review aggregator, while the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is 83%. [6] Plot [ edit] In Europe, during World War II, Martin, a nine-year-old boy, takes a liking to his new adopted brother, Dovidl. Dovidl is a miracle violin player of his age, and has just arrived in London as a refugee. After a few years, before giving a concert at age 21, Dovidl disappears without a trace, bringing shame and ruin to his adoptive family. Years later, when Martin is 56 years old, a young violinist shows a style that only Dovidl could have taught. A young violinist goes missing in London in 1951. The eventual answer as to why is powerful. Credit... Sabrina Lantos/Sony Pictures Classics The Song of Names Directed by François Girard Drama PG-13 1h 53m More Information “The Song of Names” begins with a disappearance: In 1951, David Eli Rapoport, a violinist of around 21, is set to make a splash on the London stage. Born in Poland as Dovidl, Rapoport was, as a child, left in the care of a gentile London family that respected his Judaism and nurtured his talent. They prepared him for a life as a virtuoso. What could possibly cause him to skip his debut? It says much for “The Song of Names” that the eventual answer is powerful enough to be convincing (although it seems less plausible that Dovidl would stay vanished for 35 years). Based on a novel by the classical music critic Norman Lebrecht, and directed by François Girard (“The Red Violin”), the film alternates between two timelines. Decades after Dovidl’s disappearance, Martin (Tim Roth), raised alongside him like a brother, encounters a young violinist who has Dovidl’s habit of kissing the rosin before playing. Martin’s pursuit of that clue is intercut with flashbacks to the boys’ upbringing. We learn of their mutual devotion and of their pronounced differences, and of Dovidl’s growing loss of hope for his family’s survival. (Martin is played in succession by Misha Handley and Gerran Howell; Dovidl by Luke Doyle and a superb Jonah Hauer-King, and then, in the Roth time frame, by Clive Owen. ) There is much to admire in the fluidity of Girard’s storytelling, in the music (Ray Chen did the violin solos) and in the complicated questions raised about social obligations. Still, the movie never quite justifies the contrivance of its puzzle-box construction. Parlaying this material into an arty whodunit cheapens the real history invoked. The Song of Names Rated PG-13. Disturbing wartime scenes. Running time: 1 hour 53 minutes.

Dodi national guard. Dodi tier approval. This movie is a twisted tale of a alcoholic from recovery to murderer all in an hour and half. Elijah Wood with another exceptional performance almost everything he does he really becomes some weirdo (Wilfred) for instance with many other roles but this movie will keep you interested in what may happen next. Will this timid weak minded alcoholic with daddy issues will have enough balls to make it through the night of his life after watching his supposed daddy try to stab him and die in which to only find out that wasn't daddy after all and daddy is alive in the basement and he's not such a good guy either what will happen next it's a twister.

The fact that this film exists makes my heart happy. "Come to Daddy" is the directorial debut of celebrated producer Ant Timpson (Turbo Kid, Deathgasm. The initial idea came from Timpson and then was masterfully written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler. I'm obsessed with the dialogue in the film. Part of the beauty of "Come to Daddy" is that it eases effortlessly between genres. It is intensely macabre, cartoonishly gory, but it's also insanely hilarious and sweetly emotional and tender. "Come to Daddy" is about a man in his thirties named Norval (Elijah Wood) who goes to see his long-lost father Gordon (Stephen McHattie) in his remote home. That's really all you should know about the plot. Within the beautiful insanity & mania of "Come to Daddy, the core of this screwed up dynamic between Norval and Gordon is actually very relatable and authentic. I cannot imagine anyone but Elijah Wood playing Norval. There is something in his gaze that perfectly captures the nuances of the character, and Stephen McHattie is just so good as his father, Gordon. Michael Smiley appears in the film almost unrecognizable and is just incredible.
I am so tempted to write specifics on scenes and lines and why they resonate so much, but this film is way too magical to spoil. There's so much mediocrity in film, music, when you see the horror/family-drama/black comedy film of your dreams, it's special. Thank you, Ant and Toby, for expanding the ranges of horror. "Come to Daddy" is genius and I genuinely hope both of them keep on creating for years and years and years on end.

Furious moviegoers often protest that superior stories are hard to find, yet I don't buy into this perspective. I really feel that we have extraordinary stories to narrate, but we mess up on screenplay writing, ruining a splendid story in the process. That's the issue with Malang as well. An entrancing idea may not convert into a captivating and tempting film, right?
Undoubtedly, director Mohit Suri has advanced into a smart and stylish storyteller with the passage of time and Malang bears testimony to this reality. One cannot overlook the shot compositions and the edit pattern. Malang has the unmistakable stamp of Mohit Suri. But a collage of splendidly executed sequences cannot make up for a riveting screenplay, unfortunately. That is precisely why Malang lacks the overall impact.
At heart, Malang is a game of chor-police, but the screenplay (Aniruddha Guha) fails to grab your attention after a point. Malang unfolds in two different timelines and director Mohit Suri does a brilliant job to establish what's what. But the writing (Aseem Arrora) gets muddled due to the predictability factor, after one has savoured some tremendous moments in the first hour. Although Malang is laced with just the proper amount of thrills, yet there are certain portions that put you off, that remain unexplained. It's a screenplay of convenience! Besides, too many cinematic liberties taken to establish a point of purpose also mar the impact.
What works in favour of Malang is the fact that Aseem Arora's script maintains dual-shade characters for almost every actor and is backed by exuberant performances. Malang moves at a feverish pace initially, but towards the latter portions, the editing (Devendra Murdeshwar) could have been sharper to register a long-lasting impact. Clocking in at roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes, Malang is much longer than it should be. Also, director Mohit Suri, story writer Aseem Arrora and screenplay writer Aniruddha Guha expect the viewer to grasp and figure out certain situations that arise in the film, instead of explaining it themselves, but as aforementioned, the predictability factor is a huge let-down.
One comes across a completely different Mohit Suri in Malang, blending emotions and thrills consummately. He has a unique style of storytelling, which is evident throughout the film. He merges his direction with sound-design very smoothly leaving a great impact. The highpoints include sharp dialogue and a popular soundtrack. The title track has already caught on and will prove to be a major crowd-puller. Vikas Sivaraman's cinematography is top-notch. In fact, Malang bears a stunning look all through. There's no refuting that the cinematographer has created some really alluring and enthralling visuals. The background score (Raju Singh) is electrifying. His sound effects combined with superior camera movements work really well for the film. In fact, the BGM is Malang's very backbone.
Aditya Roy Kapur is truly outstanding. He projects varied emotions without going overboard. Malang is sure to multiply his fan-following by leaps and bounds. Much of the joy comes from watching Disha Patani infuse believability into her character. She has never looked so hot, so inviting. But it's not about the looks, but talent and Disha scores on that front as well. Kunal Kemmu shines in several moments of the film. He impresses a great deal. The actor carries her part with elan, notwithstanding the discrepancies in the narrative. But it's Anil Kapoor who steals the show. He is excellent throughout and his work takes the graph of the film to an all-time high. A tailor-made role! Elisabet Elli AvrRam springs a surprise, essaying her role to perfection. Amruta Khanvilkar is in terrific form. This is one of her most uninhibited works!
On the whole, director Mohit Suri has scaled several notches above his past accomplishments in Malang. The film seduces the viewer with thrills aplenty, soulful music and of course, the crackling and wonderful onscreen chemistry between Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani. The film caters more to the youth in metros than the hardcore masses in general. Also, Anil Kapoor makes Malang come alive.

Despite what some people say, it is not playing it safe at all. There have been many imitations of Friends, and this where those entire crappy knock-offs came from. This is the original that cannot be beat. People also say the series can't be related to, but I beg to differ. If you asked any adult, I guarantee they would tell you that one situation one or more of the main characters got into they have been in also. The comedy is just one of the things I like about it. A lot of it is something recurring, like an inside joke. Most of it is sarcastic, witty, high comedy that takes a level of thinking, which is why I didn't like it until I was about twelve, when I could understand it, although my mom would watch it when I was really little, like not big enough to walk, and I could remember the theme song from when I was, like, 3 months old, and some snippets of some episodes. That is how memorable the show is. There is some low-typed comedy that you don't have to think too much about to make it funny, too, but it's not that immature potty-humor type, but some slapstick stuff here and there. The characters are memorable and lovable, because they all have quirky little things that make them different. My personal favorites are Chandler, Joey, and the completely overlooked Phoebe. Overall, it's a must-watch for anyone who wants a feel-good comedy that is not stuffy, but instead will pull you in and make you wish it was still on. I highly recommend this series, and you will not regret watching it.

Brutality of the abuse face by the children in Indian culture is really painful and needs a full stop. Film directly gives this message to the viewers which is very sensible and timely.
I went to watch this film with good expectations to watch a real suspense and complex story revolving around a serial killer. But it fails to impress me big time and never took that route of suspense and thriller. They introduced the killer in the introduction of the film. So there goes the thrill of knowing who was behind that. Then he make some outrageous moves which is very childish and has millions of plot holes. After the intermission it was only about Rani trying to catch the villain. So it converted to a same old Bollywood story.
I would really recommend to watch Ratsasan to identify how far behind this film lags in term of quality plot. On anothe note Bollywood really focuses on hero or villain rather than the story but Kollywood really pushes the story to a whole new level.
Rani Mukerji has been given a great heroine run by her husband Aditya. But it really downgrades their ability to focus on details of the story line. So it turns out another Dabaang instead of a classic thriller.

resume=Although Clarence Thomas remains a controversial figure, loved by some, reviled by others, few know much more than a few headlines and the recollections of his contentious confirmation battle with Anita Hill. Yet, the personal odyssey of Clarence Thomas is a classic American story and should be better known and understood. His life began in extreme poverty in the segregated South, and moved to the height of the legal profession, as one of the most influential justices on the Supreme Court. Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words tells the Clarence Thomas story truly and fully, without cover-ups or distortions. The documentary will open in movie theaters nationally on January 31, 2020, followed by a national broadcast on PBS in May 2020. Educational use is forthcoming

If you watch “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words” looking for a clue as to Thomas inner workings, a key to who Clarence Thomas really is, then youll have to wait a while before it arrives. But it does. The reason it takes so long is that Thomas, dressed in a red tie, light shirt, and blue jacket (yes, his entire outfit is color-coordinated to the American flag) his graying head looking impressive and nearly statue-ready as he gazes into the camera, presents himself as a regular guy, affably growly and folksy in a casual straight-shooter way. And while I have no doubt thats an honest aspect of who he is, its also a shrewdly orchestrated tactic, a way of saying: Dont try to look for my demons — you wont find them. The revealing moment comes when Thomas recalls the 1991 Senate hearings in which he was grilled on national television as part of the Supreme Court confirmation process. Does he go back and talk about Anita Hill? Yes, he does (Ill get to that shortly) but that isnt the revealing part. Discussing Anita Hill, Thomas reveals next to nothing. His métier now is exactly what it was then: Deny, deny, deny. More from Variety Film News Roundup: Clarence Thomas Documentary to Get Theatrical Release Anita Hill's Commission Launches Entertainment Industry Survey on Sexual Harassment Katy Perry and Anita Hill Honored at the DVF Awards Thomas tips his hand, though, when he recalls the moment that a senator asked if hed ever had a private conversation about Roe v. Wade. At the time, he said no — and now, 30 years later, that “no” has just gotten louder. In hindsight, hes incredulous that anyone would simply presume that hed ever had a private discussion about Roe v. Hes almost proud of how wrong they were to think so. In a Senate hearing, when you say that youve never had that kind of conversation, its in all likelihood political — a way, in this case, of keeping your beliefs about abortion ambiguous and close to the vest. A way of keeping them officially off the table. In “Created Equal, ” however, Thomas is being sincere. He has always maintained that he finds it insulting — and racist — that people would expect an African-American citizen like himself to conform to a prescribed liberal ideology. And in the same vein, he thinks its ridiculous that a Senate questioner expected him to say that hed ever spent two minutes sitting around talking about Roe v. But talk about an argument that backfires! Im not a federal judge (and the last time I checked, Ive never tried to become a Supreme Court justice) but Ive had many conversations in my life about Roe v. Why wouldnt I? Im an ordinary politically inclined American. I mean, how could you not talk about it — ever? Abortion rights, no matter where you happen to stand on them, are a defining issue of our world. And the fact that Clarence Thomas was up for the role of Supreme Court justice, and that he still views it as A-okay to say that hed never had a single discussion about Roe v. Wade, shows you where hes coming from. He has opinions and convictions. But he is, in a word, incurious. Hes a go-along-to-get-along kind of guy, a man who worked hard and achieved something and enjoyed a steady rise without ever being driven to explore things. He was a bureaucrat. Which is fine; plenty of people are. But not the people we expect to be on the Supreme Court. “Created Equal” is structured as a monologue of self-justification, a two-hour infomercial for the decency, the competence, and the conservative role-model aspirationalism of Clarence Thomas. Since he followed the 1991 Senate hearings, even in victory, by going off and licking his wounds, maintaining a public persona that was studiously recessive, theres a certain interest in “hanging out” with Thomas and taking in his cultivated self-presentation. The movie, in its public-relations heart, is right-wing boilerplate (though its mild next to the all-in-for-Trump documentary screeds of Dinesh DSouza) and there are worse ways to get to know someone like Thomas than to watch him deliver what is basically the visual version of an I-did-it-my-way audiobook memoir, with lots of news clips and photographs to illustrate his words. The first half of the movie draws you in, because its basically the story of how Thomas, born in 1948 in the rural community of Pin Point, Georgia, was raised in a penniless family who spoke the creole language of Gullah, and of how he pulled himself up by his bootstraps. After a fire left the family homeless, he and his brother went off to Savannah to live with their grandfather, an illiterate but sternly disciplined taskmaster who gave Thomas his backbone of self-reliance. He entered Conception Seminary College when he was 16, and he loved it — but in a story Thomas has often told, he left the seminary after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. when he overheard a fellow student make an ugly remark about King. Thats a telling anecdote, but theres a reason Thomas showcases it the way he does. Its his one official grand statement of racial outrage. In “Created Equal, ” he talks for two hours but says next to nothing about his feelings on the Civil Rights movement, or on what it was like to be raised in the Jim Crow South. As a student at Holy Cross, the Jesuit liberal arts college near Boston, he joined a crew of black “revolutionaries” and dressed the part in Army fatigues, but he now mocks that stage of his development, cutting right to his conservative awakening, which coalesced around the issue of busing. Thomas thought it was nuts to bus black kids from Roxbury to schools in South Boston that were every bit as bad as the ones they were already attending. And maybe he was right. Thomas, using busing and welfare as his example, decries the liberal dream as a series of idealistic engineering projects that human beings were then wedged into. There may be aspects of truth to that critique, but liberalism was also rolling up its sleeves to grapple with the agony of injustice. The philosophy that Thomas evolved had a connect-the-dots perfection to it: Treat everyone equal! Period! How easy! It certainly sounds good on paper, yet you want to ask: Couldnt one use the same logic that rejects affirmative action programs to reject anti-discrimination law? Thomas projects out from his own example: He came from nothing and made something of himself, so why cant everyone else? But he never stops to consider that he was, in fact, an unusually gifted man. His aw-shucks manner makes him likably unpretentious, but wheres his empathy for all the people who werent as talented or lucky? In “Created Equal, ” Thomas continues to treat Anita Hills testimony against him as part of a liberal smear campaign — and, therefore, as a lie. He compares himself to Tom Robinson, the railroaded black man in “To Kill a Mockingbird, ” viewing himself as a pure victim. Thomas wife, Virginia Lamp, who sat by his side at the hearings (and is interviewed in the film) stands by him today. But more than two years into the #MeToo revolution, the meaning of the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill Senate testimony stands clearer than ever. It was the first time in America that a public accusation of sexual harassment shook the earth. The meaning of those hearings transcends the fight over whether one more conservative justice got to be added to the Supreme Court. Thomas now admits that he refused to withdraw his nomination less out of a desire to serve on the Supreme Court than because caving in would have been death to him. “Ive never cried uncle, ” he says, “whether I wanted to be on the Supreme Court or not. ” Its an honest confession, but a little like the Roe v. Wade thing: Where was his intellectual and moral desire to serve on the court? By then, hed been a federal judge for just 16 months, and he admits that he wasnt drawn to that job either; but he found that he liked the work. Thomas also explains why, once he had ascended to the high court, he went through a period where, famously, he didnt ask a single question at a public hearing for more than 10 years. His rationalization (“The referee in the game should not be a participant in the game”) is, more or less, nonsense. But his silence spoke volumes. It was his passive-aggressive way of turning inward, of treating an appointment he didnt truly want with anger — of coasting as a form of rebellion. It was his way of pretending to be his own man, even as he continued to play the hallowed conservative role of good soldier. Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own words and pictures. Michael Foust Contributor 2020 31 Jan COMMENTS Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas once went 10 years without asking a single question from the bench.  Hes known as the “silent justice” — a man who would rather listen to the attorneys and read the briefs than speak out. Thats one reason that a new documentary — based on 30-plus hours of interviews with him — piqued the interest of those who have observed his life.  Called Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words (PG-13) the film tells the story of his life, from childhood until the present day, as narrated by Thomas himself.  Here are four reasons you should watch it: Photo courtesy: Manifold Productions 1. Its Filled with Faith Thomas was raised, in part, by his grandfather, who had a “philosophy of life” that “came from biblical sources, ” Thomas tells us. His grandfather was Catholic, and subsequently sent Thomas to Catholic school. In fact, Thomas nearly became a priest – even enrolling in seminary – but decided it wasnt a good fit and also was repulsed by the racism of several classmates. (One passed him a note in class reading, “I like Martin Luther King … dead. ”) Still, Thomas was greatly shaped by his Catholic faith, which framed how he views life. He calls his wife a “gift from God. ” The Framers, he says, believed individual rights came from God. (More on that below. )  When he faced allegations of sexual harassment during his 1991 Senate hearing – allegations he denied and said were part of a “high-tech lynching” – he relied on his faith for strength. He, his wife, and a few friends studied Ephesians 6:10-18 and the Apostle Pauls admonition to put on the armor of God. (His wife, Virginia, says “it felt like the demons were loose” during the hearing. Before Thomas went before the Senate committee to comment on the allegations, Sen. John Danforth, a supporter, told him to “go in the name of the Holy Ghost. ” Photo courtesy: Manifold Productions 2. It Reveals his Judicial Philosophy Thomas view on law was shaped as a young attorney by his research into slavery and segregation – and how a country founded upon the principle of equality could permit them to exist. “The answer was that it couldnt – not without being untrue to its own ideals. ” Looking for a set of laws that labeled slavery as wrong, Thomas embraced natural law – a principle he says is found in the Declaration of Independences statement that people “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. ” “The Framers understood natural law and natural rights a certain way, and it is an underpinning of our Declaration, which then becomes a foundation for the Constitution, ” he says. “They start with the rights of the individual, and where do those rights come from? They come from God. Theyre transcendent. ” When interpreting constitutional text, he says, “The goal is to discern the most likely public understanding of a particular provision at the time it was adopted. ” “A bad policy can be constitutional, ” he says. “A good policy can be unconstitutional. So that's why we start with the text. ” Photo courtesy: Manifold Productions 3. Its Full of Surprises  Thomas lived the first few years of his life in poverty in the segregated city of Savannah, Ga. His few possessions, he says, could fit in a paper grocery bag. When he moved in with his grandparents – who lived in a modest, middle-class home – he thought he had moved into a palace. It had plumbing. “Wed never been in a house with a bathtub. ”  For much of Thomas young adult years, he considered himself “radical to left” in his political philosophy, looking up to the radical young leaders at the time. At Holy Cross, he wore Army fatigues. He took part in a violent college protest.  He graduated from Yale Law School as a registered Democrat, but his only job offer was from a Republican: Missouri Attorney General John Danforth. “The idea of working for a Republican was repulsive at best, ” he says. “. I was left wing. ”  His philosophy on life, though, began to change. Photo courtesy: Manifold Productions 4. Its the Outspoken Thoughts of a ‘Quiet Man Thomas is famously known for not asking questions from the bench. The questions, he says, are pointless: “It's not my job to argue with lawyers. It's their job to make their cases. ” But in Created Equal, Thomas is (mostly) the only voice heard. If not speaking directly into the camera, hes narrating photos. The documentary is based on more than 30 hours of interviews, and the on-screen footage is fascinating.  Much of his life story – overcoming poverty, for example – can be embraced by both sides of the aisle. But some of what he says will trouble those on the Left. He labels race-centric criticism of him “stereotypes draped in sanctimony and self-congratulation. ” “If you criticize a black person who is more liberal, then youre racist, ” he says, “whereas you can do whatever to me, or to now Ben Carson, and that's fine, because, ‘You're not really black because you're not doing what we expect black people to do. ” We live in an echo-chamber age where people only watch movies and shows that mirror their beliefs. Perhaps we would be better off as a society if we watched things we dont expect to like – and, therefore, gain a deeper understanding of other viewpoints. Only then can we possibly find common ground. I learned from and enjoyed On the Basis of Sex  and RBG –  two films about liberal justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg – and I did the same with Created Equal.   Created Equal  wont make everyone happy, but its excellent, well-made and worth watching. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements including some sexual references. Content warnings: The film replays a few minutes of the sexually explicit Senate testimony from 1991. It involves discussion of a rape case. Elsewhere, language includes d- n (4) Misuse of “God” (3) SOB (1. Much of the language involves Thomas quoting other people.  Learn more:  Entertainment rating:  4 out of 5 stars. Family-friendly rating:  3 out of 5 stars. Photo courtesy: Manifold Productions.

Now, it's not the type of horror that you'd expect to be gruesome. It's the type of horror that you never forget, they type of horror that you'd always feel down your back. It was a nice day that day. I was spending the day, and soon the night, at one if my closest friends house. Her name, for her sake has been changed to Alice. Now, me and Alice have been friends for about 2 to 3 years. But this was a week after I had met her. I was the new student and so on. Back to the story, as the day went on, the night quickly approached. Alice and myself were getting bored. So, naturally we did what any other 15 year olds do when they sleep over for the night. We told stories. At first, it was nice. The stories were pleasant. But then, I heard a whisper. We were home alone that day until morning. I asked Alice, Is any of your family home. She shook her head and looked towards the door cautiously. We continued telling stories as I brushed it off as my mind playing tricks on me. But about 10 minutes later, I heard a big 'thunk. I looked to Alice again and she shrugged, slightly nervous as she yet again looked towards the door. The stories started to get more... Paranormal on her part, so I assumed she wanted me to do the same. I told silly ones to get her to laugh. But were really unpleasant. I started to get an uneasy feeling in my stomach. I told her I had to go to the bathroom, she grabbed my wrist before I could open the door. She then told me in the most serious voice I have ever heard, to lock the door, and leave the light off. I chuckled slightly at her antics until I saw how dead serious she was. I nodded a bit, confused and slightly scared. Doing what you would usually do in a bathroom, I turned the light off and locked the door before I did anything though, don't worry. I wanted to know why though. So, after a bit of debate with myself, I decided to go with doing the opposite of what she told me to do. I would regret that soon after. I went to the bathroom and did all that jazz, when I heard the front door open. I had my phone on me so I texted her, instead of yelling out to her. I remember asking her if she went outside. She texted me back quick, almost like she knew I would text her. She said, No. Is the door locked and the light off. I felt a bit guilty at this point and grew more nervous as I heard stuff moving in the kitchen, which was right next to the bathroom. I told her that I hadn't, and she hurriedly texted me to hurry up and lock the door, she told me she had already called the police and she had already locked her door, And turn off the light in the bathroom, before it was too late. I did just that, but as soon as I locked the door, the knob twisted. I had turned the light off beforehand, so even if they did try the knob, they wouldn't be able to see I was in there. I quietly hid in the bathroom closet. It felt like ages and the cops weren't even there. Even though it had been two minutes. The whole time I kept hearing the knob turn frantically, if not aggressively. I could hear the pants, of which it was definitely NOT my friend, outside the door. It was terrifying. Finally, it stopped. I thought about going out, but to be safe, I texted me friend. I asked her if it was okay to come out, she hadn't replied. I was beginning to worry. I looked under the door, and I didn't see anything. But I decided to wait a bit more. J could still hear them poking around and moving about the kitchen. Just as I was getting used to the noises, and figured they wanted nothing to do with whoever was in the bathroom aka, me, they started to get really aggressive. They started pounding on the door. I went back to my place in the closet and huddled close to the ground. I covered my ears and hoped that it would stop. It soon did, because right as the door to the bathroom slammed open, the sirens from the cop cars came. I heard the intruder gasoline and flee from where they were. I came out and saw the front door wide open, the black abyss of the night challenging me to get close to the door to close and lock it. I did just that as I went to knock on my friends door. I told her it was me and she quickly unlocked the door and ushered me inside. I looked to her, terrified about what had happened. I asked her if I could phone my mom to come pick me up, but she pleaded for me to stay, J gave in and I stayed. But that's a night I will never forget. It doesn't seem so scary now, but when I think back on it. How could she have known for me to turn off the light and lock the door? Credentials: Just who I introduced myself as.

November 10, 2019 11:40PM PT A family attempts to make a meager living operating a private ambulance in Mexico City in Luke Lorentzens gripping doc. If you think the health care system is flawed in America, “ Midnight Family ” provides a stark snapshot of how truly broken things are in Mexico City, where fewer than 45 public ambulances serve a population of 9 million. Luke Lorentzen s documentary takes up residence alongside the Ochoa family, who earn a living — just barely — by operating one of the metropolis numerous privately owned ambulances, ferrying the injured to hospitals in hopes of being monetarily rewarded for their efforts. Portraits of institutional dysfunction dont come much more urgent, and quietly bleak, than this, which should help the film attract serious attention following its Sundance Film Festival premiere. Though medically unstable Fer is the nominal head of the Ochoa household, its his mature 17-year-old son Juan who — despite his youthful complexion (replete with braces) and habit of hugging a giant stuffed animal during interviews — whos the clans real father figure. Theirs is a tenuous existence in which each night is spent hanging out in the ambulance waiting for a call. When emergency notifications arrive, they ignite harrowing races through Mexico Citys bustling streets, as the Ochoas try to beat rival EMT outfits to the scene and, then, to quickly strap the wounded into stretchers and load them into the back of their van. Such urgency comes, of course, from their desire to help people survive potentially serious injuries. Yet as Lorentzens film makes clear via the Ochoas day-to-day ordeal, its also driven by a desire to lock citizens into their care — which, ostensibly, will result in payment at the end of the ride. “Midnight Family” illustrates that compensation is rarely in the cards here, as haggling leads to either polite apologies from those unable to pay, or harsher rejections from those simply unwilling to reimburse the paramedics for their trouble. As if that werent problematic enough for Juan and Fern, who can only assume their duties if a public ambulance doesnt show up first, the police are constant impediments, blocking them from accepting patients, citing them for unreasonable (and supposedly made-up) violations, and, at one point, threatening to arrest Juan if they arent paid a bribe. “Midnight Family” conveys all of this by sticking close to the Ochoas as they navigate an untenable state of affairs that links private ambulances, hospitals and police officers in a web of financial self-interest. Serving as his own cinematographer and editor, director Lorentzen generates intense empathy by following Juan and Fern  during a breakneck attempt to get a young girl with a traumatic brain injury to a hospital — yelling at passing cars through a loudspeaker, and giving traffic directions to each other — while the girls terrified mother sits beside them in the front seat. At such moments, the film achieves a powerful measure of suspense thats intricately tied up in its despairing sociological depiction of a system thats come apart at the seams. Through it all, Juan counts every penny, spends frugally (on, for example, a dinner of tuna fish and corn) recounts his exploits to his girlfriend on the phone, and cares for his younger brother Josué, who prefers to spend his time ratting around in the back of the ambulance — laughing with friends, eating chips or catching a quick nap — rather than attending school. In his criticisms of his siblings delinquency, which come equipped with explanations about why an education is so important, Juan proves himself an everyday hero, trying at home and in the streets as a paramedic, to keep his — and everyone elses — world together. In this shocking documentary, Luke Lorentzen leaves no illusions about the fact that without private ambulances operating in a legal gray area, the healthcare system would be in ruins. From the cramped interior of the cab, the director tracks the tragicomic fate of the crew of a private, family-owned ambulance and the ethical dilemmas that its members face during a series of midnight rescue operations. Scenes showing insane driving with the sirens blaring, bribes, and scuffles with the police are dramatically interwoven with the stifling nighttime reality of life in Mexico. The documentary power of Lorentzens film stems from, among other things, the brilliant cinematography, which was recognized with an award at the Sundance Festival.

MOVIES 11:12 AM PST 2/11/2019 by Courtesy of Sundance Film Festival An intriguing perspective on health care in urban Mexico. A family-run ambulance business in Mexico City struggles to stay afloat in Luke Lorentzen's doc. A glimpse into the dysfunction of Mexico's patchwork of public and private health care, Luke Lorentzen's Midnight Family follows a family of EMTs through Mexico City as they struggle to make a living keeping other citizens alive. Though its micro view limits its usefulness in big discussions of public policy — it's easy to imagine American partisans using it as evidence both for and against government-run health care — it is a vivid reminder that all such policies are lived out by millions of individuals, who die every day when things aren't well run. Opening titles explain that in Mexico City, the government runs 45 public ambulances to serve a sprawled-out population of 9 million. That's nearly the entirety of what Lorentzen tells us directly in the film. Everything else we observe or infer during ride-alongs with the Ochoa family, who drive one of an unstated number of private ambulances that fill gaping holes in the city's delivery of health care. This observational approach gives the film its flavor, especially when it comes to family dynamics, but it makes things frustrating for viewers hoping to actually learn something. Lacking outside comment, we can guess but never be sure when the Ochoas are doing the right thing and when they're pushing an ethical line, maybe fatally. (Press notes make some things more explicit, but moviegoers don't get press notes. Whenever they pick up a patient who needs care they can't provide, for instance, they have choices to make: Go to a government-run hospital or a private one? Go to the closest facility or a further one that might be more affordable or better equipped? Leave the crowded-looking free hospital in favor of another down the road? At many junctures, the EMTs inform patients and/or their loved ones of the choices, speaking gently but usually presenting one option as smarter than others. They clearly have more experience than their customers with how the system works. But is their advice sometimes clouded by self-interest? After they've brought patients to a private facility in one scene, we see a staffer there hand over cash to the driver. Is this a shady kickback or part of a somehow legitimate transaction? The former seems likely, but we have no way of knowing for sure. We do, however, get a good sense that the role of police in this ecosystem is morally tainted. Ambulance drivers pay cops bribes in return for tips about accidents; cops hassle drivers, enforcing rules that seem to change arbitrarily. Questions of law and ethics aside, viewers get a visceral understanding here of the cutthroat nature of this private-ambulance business. Though they suffer through long bouts of boredom, the Ochoas leap into action when they hear reports of an accident: We race through the streets with them, often neck-and-neck with other vans trying to make it to the scene first. Whoever's riding shotgun mans the PA, shouting at drivers of other cars to heed the sirens and get out of the way. Juan Ochoa quickly becomes the film's star. Barely 17, he's far more professional than the older man we assume is his father. While slow-moving Dad tries to bum cash off his employee-children — he appears to have emptied his pockets for cops — perfectly groomed Juan hustles. He drives the ambulance, helps patients and reports on the night's frustrations in phone calls to his unseen girlfriend. He also does much of the undesirable job of asking for payment. Though Lorentzen mostly averts his camera's gaze when patients are around, he does listen in on some of the conversations about cost. A high-school girl who's been head-butted by her boyfriend weeps while she bleeds in the back of the van, meekly asking, Is this expensive. And shortly after, Can you please give me a hug to calm me down. Later on, another woman balks at the 3, 800 pesos the Ochoas charge for emergency transport (one of many items on their price list, that's roughly 200 U. S. When patients refuse to pay, that's that; as far as we can see, the EMTs have no recourse. What they do have is a matter-of-fact justification: When no government-provided ambulance arrived at the scene, what was your alternative? Family health insurance singapore. A work of art and no men involved, bravo. Online marriage and family counseling degree. The documentary Midnight Family is set in a place thats both familiar and strange: an ambulance. The film follows members of the Ochoa family, who live and work in Mexico City, where they operate a private ambulance. The population of Mexico City is roughly 9 million, but the government operates fewer than 45 public ambulances to serve the citizenry, and so the Ochoas — along with many others — have come up with a way to help fill the gap. They spend their nights looking for injuries and accidents, rushing to the scene to get patients to a hospital before some other ambulance company shows up. But theyre often left in the sticky situation of having to ask sick and injured people for money, and thats never easy. And thus, the Ochoa family is barely scraping by. Midnight Family is a compassionate, even funny portrait of a family that genuinely cares about its patients and has to navigate the balance between helping people who need it and being able to pay for its own basic necessities. Its the first feature film for documentarian Luke Lorentzen, whos only 26 but managed to nab an award for the films cinematography at Sundance this year. (Full disclosure: I was on the jury that awarded it to him. ) I caught up with Luke last June in Sheffield, England, where Midnight Family had its UK premiere. We talked about the long process of making the movie, the difficulty of shooting inside an ambulance, and the challenges and benefits of being an American making a film about a Mexican family. The following excerpts of our conversation have been lightly edited for length and clarity. Midnight Family captures the Ochoa family in their ambulance. 1091 Alissa Wilkinson Youre not from Mexico. How did you end up making a film about a Mexican family working and living in Mexico City? Luke Lorentzen I was living in Mexico City already. I moved there like a week after graduating from college. I was living with a Mexican friend for four years who grew up there, and it was kind of a spontaneous thing: “ Lets go there and see if I find a film. ” I met the Ochoa family just parked in front of my apartment building, and in a spontaneous moment, I] asked them if I could ride along for a night, mainly because I was curious about their familys dynamic. Like, what is a family-run ambulance like? And then, on that first night, I saw the ethical questions, and the adrenaline, and was pretty excited about making a movie about them. Did you know a lot about for-profit ambulances in Mexico before you met the Ochoas? I didnt know anything about it. Its something very few people know about. If you need an ambulance once in your life, thats a lot. So, the lack of public ambulances in Mexico City] has become this egregious example of corruption and government dysfunction, but it hasnt gotten as much attention as it deserves. And when it has gotten attention, its often been mistreated patients making a fuss about private ambulances. Even just getting the number of government ambulances that are working was really complicated. [The government] reports having two or three times more ambulances than they actually have, and I had to go to every station and count them to find out that what they were reporting was not accurate at all. Or they had that many once, but two-thirds didnt have engines in them. So you had to do some good old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting. Yes. Theres so few ambulances, it took me only a few hours. Theres only two organizations that the government funds for emergencies and health care. How did the Ochoas get into the private ambulance business? I spent three years filming, so I slowly got closer and closer to them, and learned more each night that I was there. The Ochoas ambulance is an expired ambulance from Oklahoma that was shipped down to Mexico, where they bought it. Thats the story with a lot of these. You see a lot of ambulances that have foreign text on them, often from the US. One of the ambulances that they chase a lot is bright green and comes from the UK. It looks like its really close quarters in that ambulance, and you were crammed in there shooting with them for years. That seems really challenging. Were you shooting alone? Yeah, it was just me. It started that way because of how the funding was. And its how I had done my other films. Then it quickly became clear that that was probably the best way to do it. I ended up shooting it with two cameras. One was mounted on the hood of the ambulance, and then I had another camera in the back of the ambulance. You really need these conversations that happened between the driver and the people in the back. It was dynamic. But it was an enormous amount of equipment. I knew that if I could physically get it to the ambulance at the start of the day without an assistant, then I could manage it throughout the night. Figuring out how to juggle all that was a lot. And everyone was wearing a wireless microphone. I know theyre not really equivalent, but it sounds a little bit like the unpredictability and high pressure that goes along with making a reality TV show. Yeah. What saved me is that it wasnt that unpredictable. Once I was set up in the ambulance, I knew that the way in which people would move around it would be almost identical every night. That allowed me to make some really specific visual choices. The movie didnt look like this for the first 70 percent of the footage — I had to learn how to make a film, and I was saved over and over again by the repetition of their work. The look of the film is noteworthy — its cinematic. My hope for it, visually, was to create an image-based, scene-based story. What excited me from the very beginning was that I could make a vérité doc that operated with a high energy level, with excitement, and that could pull people in so many different directions, from humor to tragedy. It was just all there. All I had to do was film it and put it together properly. Thats so rare — you usually need to do so much digging. Did being a white non-Mexican present challenges? Were there any advantages? Yeah. At the end of the day, the whole thing rests on my relationship with the Ochoas, making sure we had a real relationship that goes two ways — that they were as connected to me as I was to them. That took three years to happen. We submitted a cut to Sundance in 2017 and didnt get in, and [we] decided to take an entire additional year [to work on it. In that year, about 80 percent of the movie as it is now was actually shot. I think my job when Im trying to make a film like Midnight Family is to decide, can I connect with people in a meaningful way thats not just about the movie, but something bigger than that? If I can do that, I start to understand the culture better. They will correct my wrong assumptions. Ive been in work-for-hire situations where we cant take the time or there isnt the willingness to form that connection. Thats when the question of whos telling whose story really gets more complicated. Right. Because its their story, but youre, in a sense, the author. Also, our Mexican producers would probably say that they felt a Mexican journalist [or filmmaker] might have had a harder time connecting with the Ochoas than I did. They were curious about who the hell I was, and got a kick out of me riding around with them as this American guy who made them look cool. I dont know if thats totally true — I think, knowing the Ochoas, that they would have let anyone in who was willing to ride along with them. Thats why theyre so special. So the film is about a very specific relationship between me and the Ochoas. The Ochoas in Midnight Family. I have to say that when I first started watching it, I figured it would be an exposé on corruption in the medical field or something. But really its a movie about a family, and its almost a dark comedy at times. Its cool that you saw elements of that. Different people take different stuff from it; the comedy is sometimes harder for people to take in. In Mexico, it works very much as a dark comedy at times. In the US and here in the UK, I think people are quicker to get a little bit deeper into the ethical questions. Thats a bit funny, when you think about it. A lot of American entertainment has centered around characters in medical settings, like Greys Anatomy and ER. It feels like people should be primed for both the comedy and drama that happens in the medical world. People are especially shocked by how much money plays into the decisions people make about their medical care in the movie. I had a doctor come up to me after a screening in New York who worked in an ER in Baltimore. He was like, “We are making the same financial decisions about peoples lives in our ER every night. ” Thats problematic, but its happening everywhere in the world where governments are not thinking about the relationship between money and health care. People are going to make decisions about their health care and hospital visits based on what they can afford. Yeah. I think about the film as showing two forms of survival: The Ochoas are trying to survive, and the patients are trying to survive. And at each accident scene, those two kinds of survivals bump up against each other in increasingly complicated ways. The Ochoas have two goals: to save peoples lives and to make a living. That cant be easily done at the same time. Sometimes their patients are victims, but the Ochoas are also victims of the system, trapped and left with this menu of decisions that are shitty. Thats whats remarkable about the film: You can see the double-edged sword of altruism. They really seem to care about their patients, while also having to ask them for money before treating them. Thats whats so fascinating. When you put good people into a broken system, the things they end up needing to do are really complicated. The Ochoas are good people. They were so generous and warm with me. Then you see them do things in a certain situation that make you nervous [like asking for money before treating an injured patient. The first time that that happened, I was really conflicted. I didnt have an edited film to guide me through it, the way audiences do now. Midnight Family opened in limited theaters on December 6.

Critics Pick In this outstanding documentary, a family of emergency medical workers struggles both to save lives and to make a living. Credit. 1091 Media Midnight Family NYT Critic's Pick Directed by Luke Lorentzen Documentary, Action, Crime, Drama 1h 21m More Information Periodically while watching “Midnight Family” you feel as if you cant look at the screen for another second. But you cant look away either. That tension encapsulates the push-pull of this documentary, a haunting portrait of a family of emergency medical worker s in Mexico City. Because as you tag along on another wild nighttime ride, and yet one more life-or-death race, the familys careening ambulance seems like an emblem both of their reality and of your own whiplashing position as a viewer. The family at its center, the Ochoas, own and operate one of the many private ambulances that serve Mexico City. The director Luke Lorentzen takes you right inside the ambulance, squeezing you in alongside the Ochoas and several others as they tend to traumatized victims and an occasional member of a patients family. Its no surprise that it can be a deeply distressing fit. Nearly as alarming, though, are those instances when the Ochoas race a rival ambulance to the next accident and the documentary enters that unsettling zone where the pleasures of the chase (and good filmmaking) slam into your ethical sensibility, which is to Lorentzens point. Your stomach may start jumping (your thoughts too) e ven before the movie and ambulance take off. After opening with some sober scene-setting — a man washing blood off a bright yellow stretcher — Lorentzen drops in some of the documentarys few informational details. “In Mexico City, ” reads text on a dark screen, “the government operates fewer than 45 emergency ambulances for a population of nine million. ” Much of the citys emergency health care, the note continues, is handled by “a loose system of private ambulances. ” The Ochoas belong to this informal network, tending to hundreds of patients each year from inside their red-and-white ambulance. Serving as his own cinematographer, Lorentzen spends a lot of time in the back of that van, a space that you settle into as workers and patients enter and exit. He regularly points the camera at the windshield, giving you front-row access to the chaos; every so often, he trains it on the rear-door windows, as if looking for an escape. Another camera, mounted on the top of the dashboard, enables you to see inside the van, where Fer, the Ochoa paterfamilias, is generally found riding shotgun beside one son, Juan, a 17-year-old with a meticulous fade haircut and the wheel skills of a NASCAR racer. When the sirens blare and lights flash, Fer and Juan can make a formidable, at times grimly diverting, tag team. “Get out of my way, bicycle! ” Fer yells over the ambulance loudspeaker in an early scene, as the intensely focused Juan drives and another of Fers sons — the babyish-looking Josué, whos around 10 — tries to steady himself in the rear. As Lorentzen cuts from the vans occupants to the darkly jeweled street and back again, everyone and everything passing by is told where to go. “Keep moving, bus! ” Fer yells, before slipping into street-philosopher mode. “This is why people die! ” he says, over a lingering shot of Josué. “Because people like you dont move! ” The juxtaposition of Josués face and Fers words are representative of Lorentzens method. Embracing a familiar observational approach, he doesnt talk you through “Midnight Family” but instead lets his filmmaking choices convey his thoughts on the Ochoas and the mercenary world they inhabit. (He edited the documentary and is one of its producers. Lorentzen never explains how he found the family, who not only granted him seemingly free access to their ambulance, but also brought him into their home. Hes more expansive in the production notes where he says that he introduced himself after he saw Juan cleaning the van while Josué was playing with a soccer ball. “Midnight Family” can be tough to watch, but it never feels unprincipled or indulgently exploitative. Some of the most traumatic incidents have, of course, occurred before the ambulance roars up, but not all. Even when the worst happens, Lorentzen doesnt turn the gore and tears into a spectacle, and its instructive that some of the most dreadful moments take place off-camera or are conveyed through the triage patter or in later conversations. He also tends to obscure the faces of the wounded and whether legally or ethically motivated, this discretion is a relief. Its humanizing for the victims (be warned that these include children) and for the viewer. One of the enduring hurdles in visual storytelling is how to represent the suffering of others without adding to it, a difficulty that Lorentzen has clearly weighed. Thats evident in his point of view, what he shows you and doesnt, and obvious in his empathetic portrayal of the Ochoas. Theyre an appealing, affecting collection of souls, and you too want the best for them, even when you grasp their role in a system plagued by class inequities and inadequate services, kickbacks and shakedowns. Here, if it bleeds, it leads right into everyones pocket — the police, emergency workers, hospitals — a truism that makes this documentary feel finally, appallingly, universal. Midnight Family Not rated. In Spanish, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 21 minutes.

Hop in an ambulance with Mexico Citys Ochoa family, a group of civilians who run a private EMT service in a bustling city sorely underserved by the governments limited medical resources. "Provides a stark snapshot of how truly broken things are in Mexico City. "— Variety It seems beyond belief, if not downright cruel, that a major global metropolis should provide only 45 ambulances to serve a population of nine million. But for the Ochoa family—father Fernando, 17-year-old de facto family leader Juan, and chubby kid brother Josue—the chaos of Mexico City's streets nonetheless provides them with a hard-won way to make a meager living; hustling from grisly car wrecks to shootings to domestic-violence calls, the Ochoas are part of an army of private, for-profit ambulance services filling the gaps left by the city's deeply broken medical system. Breathlessly racing through uncaring traffic to be the first at the scene, only to quickly deal with bribe-hungry cops, competing EMTs, and victims who cannot or simply refuse to pay, Fernando and his sons somehow manage to find the time to be a normal, caring family—and to hold onto a belief that, even amidst all the mayhem, tomorrow will be a better day—in this stunning new film from acclaimed documentarian Luke Lorentzen, winner of the Premio Mezcal for Best Film, named Best Director at the 2019 Guadalajara International Film Festival, and given the U.
